On August 20th, 2020, Tucson officially turns 245.
On August 20th, 1775, Captain Hugo O'Conor established the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson. Of course our community is really much older, occupied for at least 4,100 years, but August 20th has become the day we celebrate our birthday.
In honor of this, the Tucson-Pima County Historic Commission Birthday Planning Committee and the Presidio Museum have compiled a list of Great Things About Tucson, Pima County, and Our Community. The next 10 days will see a few of these things presented on our blog each day.
#1, Annual Tohono O'odham Rodeo and Fair. Arizona's longest-running all-Indian rodeo and fair. Waila music is played, girls compete in a Toka Tournament, and an All-Indian Pow-wow contest takes place. The rodeo is held in January.

#2. Sonoran Gastronomy. A fusion of Sonoran, Mexican, Native American, Heritage, Asian, Indian, and everything in between. In 2015, Tucson was named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, the first in the United States. Did you know that the chimichanga was invented in Tucson?
#3. Chuk-shon, Sentinel Peak (A-Mountain), and Tumamoc Hill. Did you know that Chuk-shon is O'odham for "at the base of the black [hill]." It is what the O'odham called their village at the base of Sentinel Peak. The Spaniards transformed the word into Tucson. Today you can walk to the top of Tumamoc Hill and, on Mondays, Sentinel Peak and look down onto our community while enjoying being surrounded by saguaros and other native vegetation.
#4. Monsoons/Chubascos- Best appreciated on one's porch. You can smell the rain, which is actually the smell of the creosote bush. The plant releases a musky, earthy smell from a coating on its leaves that helps it conserve water. The Desert Smells Like Rain by Gary Paul Nabhan and Sing Down the Rain by Judy Moreillon describe the monsoon season.
