GARDEN OPENING AND ARCHAEOLOGY LECTURE.

Our first summer event will take place on Saturday, June 27th, 2020 at 6:00 P.M.

Soledad's Garden Reception

Soledad Jacome lived in the Presidio Museum's Sonoran row house from 1866 to 1911. The patio garden features new plantings and interpretive signage tied to the story of her life. Mrs. Jacome was a single mother who supported four daughters as a seamstress after the death or desertion of her husband in 1873.

The garden was designed by heritage gardener Dena Cowan. Cowan will describe the plants and foodways of Mexican-American families of Territorial-period Tucson. These families used their interior courtyards as an extension of their house, and Cowan will tell how a typical courtyard was used.

The reception will include a cash bar and aguas frescas made with ingredients like those growing in the garden.

Recent Archaeological Finds in Downtown Tucson

At 7:00 PM, archaeologist Homer Thiel will describe what was found during excavations on the west side of the 1929 Pima County Courthouse, undertaken prior to the construction of the new January 8thMemorial. The work was recently featured on June 1st in the Arizona Daily Star

The lecture will be LIVE-STREAMED on Facebook via the Presidio San Agustin page. This is our first live-streaming, so hopefully it will work! It will be available afterwards on our page for viewing as well.

The reception and lecture are free, but donations are always appreciated. Face masks are required and we will have some special ones available for purchase for $6.00. Only 50 people will be allowed into the park, so to reserve your place in advance please email info@TucsonPresidio.com. Walk-ins are also welcome up to the 50 person maximum.
